9x2 Contemporary English Chansons

English contemporary chanson

'Quirky and accomplished' appears to be the theme that unites the nine solo artists on this collection, with each contributing two songs. 'Grown-Up Songs For Grown-Up People' proclaims the sleeve -- so don't expect any easy hooks or danceable beats.

Instead, Nine Times Two is a singer-songwriter-based acoustic/keyboard set with obvious folk elements. Some of it is a little too arts-workshop for comfort [...] but other songs are to treasure [...]. 'It's Then You Know' by Des de Moor is an elegant, almost classical parlour piece. Well-crafted and very English -- in the best way.

-- Joel Iver, Record Collector, June 2002.

A cute and sensible, but in the end over-disparate collection of what the liner (loosely) describes as "grown-up songs for grown-up people". The problem with this set can also be viewed as a selling-point - basically, that I can't imagine any one listener (even those with widest sensibilities and/or tolerance) is likely to connect completely with every one of the nine artists represented on this album, they're simply too diverse. The "usual suspects" put in an appearance, naturally [...]

You'd expect the wonderful Barb Jungr in any such collection, and her two contributions are expectedly scintillating and decidedly classy, as are those of leading cabaret-chansonnier Des De Moor, although I still find his work more of an acquired taste. [...]Worth having for the high proportion of real good stuff.
