Another song from the later Irresistible Force period in 1989, this began as an experiment with vaguely West African rhythms and samples of Tibetan instruments. It didn't appear on the original release of Photographs but subsequently I included it in live sets, sung to a backing sequence, and recorded it for a demo, Margins, a year later. It was then added as a bonus track on the CD issue.
Oh sailor, sailor, tell me why
You wear such pictures on your skin
And sailor, sailor, tell me of
The places you have travelled in.
Tell me the hopes, tell me the fears,
Tell me the stories behind your souvenirs,
Tell me of sun-soaked seas and cities fair
But tell me most of all what took you there.

Under the needle held in ancient hands
The skin takes on the images of foreign lands.
Under the sword and under the gun
The picture painted isn't such a pretty one.

Oh sailor, sailor, tell me how
You helped to keep the old flag flying.
Old salty dogs soon learn new tricks
And snap back when you think they're dying.
Haifa, Gibraltar and Rangoon,
Calcutta, Cape Town and Kowloon,
Bombay, Port Stanley, Belfast City-
On your arms they look so pretty.

Under the needle held in ancient hands
The skin takes on the images of foreign lands.
Under the sword and under the gun
The picture painted isn't such a pretty one.
