Out of Step
Photographs in Empty Houses Photographs in Empty Houses
One of 9 original songs, 1 instrumental piece, 2 covers and 2 theatre songs on my first musical cabaret album.

This was one of the few songs on Photographs written in 1991-92 with the album at least partly in mind. It's a sort-of Latin pop song that expressed how I felt as the political changes of the 1990s began to play themselves out: it was originally the opener but was re-jigged in the running order when several people pointed out it was totally untypical of the rest of the album.
They used to tell me that I was arrogant:
I used to say that I was proud.
Stand up for something that you believe in,
Don't be afraid to stand out from the crowd.
But now the crowd is getting bigger
And the world seems built to last:
I may still feel just like a man of the future
But I look like a man of the past.

Am I out of step with the times?
Can't forget yesterday's lines?
Am I out of sync with the frames,
Cheating in another person's games?
Am I out of step with the times?
Can't forget yesterday's lines?
Like a ghost that takes to the floor
When the dance hall's closing.

And is your memory getting shorter?
Do you rush out as credits roll?
Do you just smile as you fasten your safety belt
And surrender your control?
Have you forgotten your hopes for the future
Now your back's against the wall
Just like we all forget about global warming
At the minute the snow starts to fall?

Am I out of step with the times?
Can't forget yesterday's lines?
Am I out of sync with the frames,
Cheating in another person's games?
Am I out of step with the times?
Can't forget yesterday's lines?
Like a ghost that takes to the floor
When the dance hall's closed its doors?
