Jo de Waal and Julian Masters
Pirate Jenny's continues into 2005 with one the most unusual and interesting bills we've put together in a long time, including sparkling new arrangements of German cabaret classics, eccentric original songs and brilliant new settings of Irish poetry.
Jo de Waal and Julian Masters, best known for their appearances with offbeat art cabaret outfit The Pigeon Quintet, visit Pirate Jenny's in duo format tonight to provide inventive, accomplished and entertaining reworkings of classic pieces from the likes of Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler and Stephen Sondheim.
Singer Jo de Waal is in her element in this repertoire, with a powerful voice, commanding interpretations, charismatic stage presence and a flair for irony and humour. Guitarist Julian Masters also provides fascinating arrangements for a fresh, funny, intimate and heartfelt take on love and war.
"If Brecht , Eisler and Weill could hear these interpretations today, they'd know that their work was in very good hands indeed." - Barb Jungr.
Visiting from Newcastle is intensely sweet-voiced singer and accordionist Tim Dalling, with a set from his acclaimed album Blossom. Tim's songs blur the boundaries between chanson, folk and jazz, and include original settings of the words of Belfast-born poet Louis MacNeice.
"Powerfully bittersweet...truly superb" The Herald on Sunday
As always, Pirate Jenny's founder and host Des de Moor will be on hand, tonight delivering a set of guitar-based songs with both originals and covers from the cabaret-chanson tradition.
