Tuesday 2 March 2004: Last shout at the Vortex III |

Liesl Müller
During her final season at the Vortex, Pirate Jenny is proud to continue to bring in top-class performers new to the club, tonight pairing two outstanding specialists in "classical" chanson and cabaret.
Liesl Müller pays tribute to the chansons and cabaret songs of the "golden era" of the 1920s-1940s, exploring the repertoire of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Léo Ferré, Gilbert Bécaud, and an interesting choice of material from the "town of her dreams", her native Vienna. Liesl has theatre and cabaret in her blood: her mother renowned Viennese cabarettiste and soubrette Rosl Berndt, her father theatre owner Karl Müller.
Today she's probably best known for her teaching activities as founder of the Elisabeth Johnson Organisation, organising English courses for overseas students, but luckily for fans of authentic European song she's now devoting more time to her first love, singing and performing, and we're delighted to present her at Pirate Jenny's.
Rachel Rose Reid will be familiar to regular PJ audiences from her collaborations with Peter Scott Presland, but tonight she's making a well-deserved appearance as an act in her own right. Rachel is a young cabaret singer who's already made a mark with audiences at London's Jermyn Street Theatre and No 3 Green Street with her blend of song, storytelling and humour delivered with a truly dazzling voice.
Tonight she's presenting extracts from her show Stories of Innocence and Experience, including cabaret classics from the last century alongside more modern material that will surprise and delight, in the company of pianist and MD Adam Goodman.
Master of ceremonies is as usual Des de Moor with his own selection of classic and original chansons, joined by maestro David Harrod at the piano. Liesl Müller's website: www.golden-era.co.uk
