Tuesday 4 March 2003: Keyboard Cabaret Capers |
![]() ![]() |
Mark Bunyan
You'd be an April Fool not to visit Pirate Jenny's tonight when two
eccentric geniuses of the keyboard start hitting the ivories. MARK BUNYAN
started performing his own songs and monologues at the piano over 25 years
ago, establishing himself as the consummate gay cabaret activist in places
as far flung as New York, San Francisco, Stockholm and Estonia. Canonised by
the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence as St Mark Of the Musical Tendency, he
was also a founder of the Political Song Network and creator of two
musicals.
Now the man Ned Sherrin called "one of the great comedians at the piano" is
back on the circuit with a vengeance, with numerous radio appearances and
theatre runs with a set of new songs and old classics. We're proud to
welcome him back to the Pirate Jenny stage with his unique blend of wit,
passion and flawless musicianship.
"Somewhere between Lehrer and Brel with the arrogant insouciance of The
Master" Sue Arnold, Observer.
Queen of the funky harmonium JANE BOM-BANE is a true original, performing
original poems and songs to the on- and off-beats of a bellowing harmonium -
or sometimes three - small, middle-sized and large. She also tells grown-up
fairy-tales, sings songs to a small guitar and astonishes with hats that
grow with her harmoniums. This former associate of the Flying Lizards is a
well-established favourite on the Edinburgh fringe, has numerous TV
appearances to her credit. Recently she's been exploring the world of
palindromic songwriting with collaborator Nick Pynn and we're proud to
welcome her back for an in-concert performance.
"Gloriously eccentric. Hugely entertaining. Unmissable" Edinburgh Evening News
Pirate Jenny's host and resident performer DES DE MOOR offers his own
mini-cabaret set in the company of the man they can't stop calling the
lovely RUSSELL CHURNEY. Des brings his unique and dramatic performance to
moving and witty originals as well as drawing on a selection of French,
German and
Dutch material in original translations.
