Koen De Cauter Trio
The work of two of the greatest French language songwriters of the 20th century is aired at Pirate Jenny's tonight, in the hands of two outstanding interpreters. Renowned Flemish performer Koen De Cauter visits in the company of his trio with the songbook of southern French chansonnier Georges Brassens to hand, while Anglo-Dutch Des de Moor devotes his set to new English versions of songs by famous Belgian Jacques Brel.
Koen de Cauter is a veteran singer, songwriter, guitarist and reed player who first came to prominence on the European New Orleans and gypsy jazz scene of the 1970s and 1980s, touring internationally with the renowned Waso Quartet and working with luminaries such as Fapy Lapertin. He's now equally well-established in the chanson and Dutch-speaking "kleinkust" genres, known for his original material, for collaborations with Wannes Van De Velde and Brel's accordionist Jean Corti, English chansonnier Robb Johnson and especially for his authoritative interpretations of the work of Sète-born chanson legend Georges Brassens.
In recent years Koen has recorded and performed from New Zealand to New Orleans but this is a rare chance to see him in London. He's appearing in the company of his two sons, Waso De Cauter on guitar and Dajo De Cauter on bass, with a special guest appearance by fellow Waso alumnus Bill Greenow on clarinet. Expect an outstanding performance with Brassens supplemented by some of Koen's original tunes.
Des de Moor is a first class songwriter and unique and dynamic performer who for over ten years has provided a platform for both his own work and many other talented chansonniers and musical cabaret singers as founder and host of Pirate Jenny's. He's also known as a translator, providing many new, accurate and singable versions of material from French, Dutch and German, most notably the work of Brussels-born Jacques Brel. Until now he's not sung a Brel song at the Drill Hall, but tonight that changes with a show devoted to new Brel translations, including some not heard before in English. He's appearing in the company of superb Australian pianist Jenny Carr, known for her work with Barb Jungr as well as jazz and swing player.
