Piaffinitée
Pirate Jenny proudly presents an especially evocative and atmospheric collection of great song performances tonight from a varied cast of chansonniers and musical cabaret performers.
Tonight's headline trio of PJ débutantes Piaffinitée might be based in southwest England, but as their name suggests, share a passion for the music of Edith Piaf, the sparrow of Pigalle. Their intense and illuminating new arrangements of Piaf's songs focus on recreating something of the intimacy and authentic Parisian flavour of her early small band recordings.
Singer Djamila hails from the south of France but has held a lifelong affection for Piaf and now performs her songs with heartfelt committment. Accordionist Basil Bunelik is a busy world music specialist who also turns his hand to kletzmer and Russian music. Versatile Phil Berthoud completes the lineup on guitar, mandolin and violin.
Rachel Rose Reid first came to the attention of PJ audiences from her collaborations with Peter Scott Presland. She's a young cabaret singer who's already made a mark with audiences at London's Jermyn Street Theatre and No 3 Green Street with her blend of song, storytelling and humour delivered with a truly dazzling voice. Tonight she continues an exploration that started when a bunch of her forefathers decided to take the steps that resulted in her being born in London instead of Lvov, threading together
songs that have kept her family bound together as rabbis, shoemakers and
British Telecom archivists.
Master of ceremonies is as usual Des de Moor with his own selection of classic and original chansons, joined by maestro David Harrod at the piano. Tonight Des continues his themed presentations at the Drill Hall with a set of songs of the sea and travel from the likes of Wannes van de Velde and Noël Coward. Back to the Pirate Jenny's page
