Louise Rutkowski
Tonight Pirate Jenny presents an especially varied bill of English-language
musical cabaret and Anglo-French quirkiness, welcoming for the first time a
superb singer who's been causing a big stir on the music-theatre scene.
Former soul singer and ex-This Mortal Coil vocalist LOUISE RUTKOWSKI won
wide acclaim for her 2001 show Short Stories, celebrating the songs of Randy
Newman, and tonight she brings her follow-up compendium to the Vortex. All
The Girls I've Loved Before explores the repertoire of some of Louise's
favourite divas, including Dusty Springfield, Bessie Smith, Kitty Wells,
Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, Jeannie C Riley, Carole King and Lynn
Anderson.
Songs range from low-down'n'dirty blues belters to cabaret
showstoppers with a murder ballad or two thrown in for good measure, all
delivered with Louise's smoky and expressive vocals and laconic between-song
conversation. Accomplished and inventive jazz-world-fusion pianist ROLAND
PERRIN accompanies Louise with the assistance of SIMON MORTON on drums and
OROH ANGIAMA on bass.
"Majestic, sublime and haunted, with a silken purity and grace that is just
astonishing." Hot Press
Anglo-French duo FANTASMAGORIA last brought their fusion of European cabaret
and gypsy music to Pirate Jenny's back in 2001: since then they've relocated
back to France but have been touring Europe over the past few months and
we've managed to slot them in for a return appearance on a fleeting London
visit. SEBASTIEN GUERREAU on accordion and TOM BAKER on guitar deliver
quirkily fascinating original songs in both English and French.
As always Pirate Jenny's host and resident performer DES DE MOOR contributes
his own mini-set of unique and dramatic performance combining moving and
witty originals and classic European songs, with DAVID HARROD on piano.
