The Pigeon Quintet
Two of the most inventive and distinctive acts to have graced Pirate Jenny's stage return to the Vortex in July for a genre-busting musical cabaret double bill.
The Pigeon Quintet are rapidly emerging as one of Britain's leading musical cabaret outfits, combining reworkings of some classic pieces from the likes of Weill and Eisler with spiky new material. Singer Jo de Waal is in her element in this repertoie, with a powerful voice, commanding interpretations, charismatic stage presence and a flair for irony and humour. Guitarist Julian Masters also provides fascinating arrangements for a talented ensemble that's rounded out with clarinettist Kate Romano, trumpeter Kris Klubben and cellist Marianne Tyler. The Pigeons are just about to launch a new album and copies should be available on the night.
As if that wasn't enough, global village trombone trio The Blowpipes also return, combining dazzling musicality with dry humour and a diverse world-jazz-cabaret repertoire. Leader, poet and bone-blower Paul Taylor is a familiar face on Britain's jazz and Latin scenes and this irresistibly imaginative project mixes his eclectic tastes with his penchant for offhand verse in a winning way. Their version of 'Leader of the Pack', complete with trombone-interpreted sound effects, has to be heard to be believed.
Pirate Jenny's host and resident performer Des de Moor also offers his own mini-cabaret set in the company of David Harrod, bringing his unique and dramatic performance to moving and witty originals as well as drawing on a selection of French, German and Dutch material in original translations.
