Jude Alderson
Tonight Pirate Jenny presents an exclusive sneak preview of a new piece from Amazonia theatre company: Jude Alderson’s Cabaret Opera Itinerants. On the run for murder, two young women fall in love over the dead body of a soldier. Madam Bo-Bo and her Bohemian cello playing acrobats, the haunted, hunted murderess Flora finds catharsis in male impersonation. A gothic tale of music hall artists during the Crimea.
Jude trained as an acrobat, became the driving force behind the legendary Sadista Sisters, has worked widely as an actor on stage, TV and films, and has written several plays, including a Civil War epic, The People's Opera, produced in the Forest of Dean. In recent years she's become a key figure in music theatre and musical cabaret in Britain through the acclaimed Entartete Muzik shows based on work suppressed in Nazi-era Germany, and we're delighted to invite her to Pirate Jenny at last.
Also making his PJ début tonight is masterful singer-songwriter, George Papavgeris. Born in Thessaloniki, Greece, George's musical career has encompassed everything from folk to singing Byzantine chant at an eisteddfod, but a few years back he hit a creative wave that saw a stream of insightful songs in praise of ordinary people, with a string of gigs and albums, most recently Ordinary Heroes. His songs have since been recorded by folk luminaries such as Vin Garbutt, Andy Irvine and Roy Bailey.
Pirate Jenny's host Des de Moor delivers one of his own outstanding sets tonight, featuring European songs in original translation under the banner of Those Old and Eveil Songs'I>.
