Des de Moor
Pirate Jenny's founder and host, salty chansonnier DES DE MOOR, makes one of
his occasional forays to the top of the bill tonight with an extended set of
hard-hitting originals and classic chansons and cabaret songs in new
translations in the company of piano maestro DAVID HARROD.
Known as "one of Britain's leading interpreters of the cabaret-chanson
tradition" (Guardian), Des is an accomplished and intense performer with a
distinctive and powerful voice. As well as his own material and
translations, he's also become known for music theatre pieces, including the
acclaimed show Darkness and Disgrace which transplants songs by David Bowie
into an intimate chanson-style environment and is currently being recorded.
His punchy contributions to PJ nights are always welcome and this is a great
opportunity to hear him expand into a wider repertoire.
New to Pirate Jenny's are KINKAJOU, a combination of rich-voiced singer
POLLY MACLEAN from Scotland with Yorkshireman ANDY CHAPMAN providing the
music, also featuring AL FIRRELL. The band's CD of quirky and inventive
songs, kicking off with a description of a bittersweet romantic triste
lubricated by a can of Irn Bru, immediately caught Jenny's attention though
a previous attempt to book them in March foundered due to illness, so we're
looking forward finally to welcoming them to the Vortex.
