Philip Jeays Band
Pirate Jenny's returns to the Vortex after a couple of months break tonight, and two familiar and popular faces return to launch our new season.
Philip Jeays is one of the foremost British artists developing new material in a chanson-influenced style. He draws on chanson greats like Jacques Brel and Claude Nougaro, but also counts the Sex Pistols and Tom Robinson among his influences. His combination of acerbic wit, raw emotion and astonishing performance technique has made him a long-established audience favourite. He's recently released a new album and appears in the company of a full band featuring PJ stalwart David Harrod on piano.
"A fresh, fearless young singer, songwriter and performer whose artistic potential is scary. His songs combine the French's love for macabre storytelling with the European art-song tradition and a very English eccentricity" - The Herald.
Singer and club host Katrina Rublowska, former leader of all-female soul/world/jazz a capella group The Smashing Dishes, is tonight's second guest. US-born Katrina's superb voice, alternately soulful and declamatory, folksy and sophisticated, notable songwriting skills and authoritative interpretations hard-hitting songs from the American left ensure a must-see set, her first in London for many months.
Pirate Jenny's host and resident performer Des de Moor also offers his own mini-cabaret set, bringing his unique and dramatic performance to moving and witty originals as well as drawing on a selection of French, German and Dutch material in original translations. David Harrod keeps himself busy accompanying all of tonight's singers.
