Ports of Call
Pirate Jenny casts off for her second Autumn season at the Drill Hall 2 with a sparkling lineup of theatre song and chanson from a bill of outstanding artists.
Travel from the brothels of Berlin down the Boulevard of Broken Dreams to a
sixpenny bed in Surabaya in the company of Ports of Call, exploring the surreal, darkly humorous and poetic aspects of life's grittier side with songs by
Brecht, Weill, Brel,Hollaender and more, in English, German and
French.
Two inspirational British-based but German-born singer-actors front this show: Louis Andriessen and Steve Martland collaborator and former Rocky Horror Magenta Gertrude Thoma, and William Ludwig, sometime member of German pop band Gregorian. Composer and founder member of Gloria Theatre Company Nicolas Bloomfield performs piano duties, while they're directed by Boris Boskovic.
Although the show is new to Pirate Jenny's, Gertrude and William have entertained us before as solo performers -- indeed, they first met when they were both on a PJ bill back in 1998, and then started working together. We've been trying to get them back ever since and are delighted to say that finally we've managed it!
Wisconsin-born Julie McKee singer with a rich, expressive and soulful voice who's made a name for herself singing jazz standards and folk songs -- with a few songs off the beaten track too, including music theatre numbers from the likes of Kurt Weill. We're delighted to welcome this fine singer for a short début set exploring the more Jennyish aspects of her repertoire.
Pirate Jenny's founder and host Des de Moor is acknowledged as one of Britain's leading artists working in the cabaret-chanson tradition, with a repertoire encompassing his own salty English chansons and innovative interpretations of other people's material, including a line in original and faithful English versions of mainland European songs. Tonight he'll round out the European flavour with a set of French-language songs from the likes of Léo Ferré, Claude Nougaro, Georges Brassens and Barbara in new English versions with David Harrod at the piano.
