Monique
Pirate Jenny gets you in the goodwill mood in December with a bill of English and French chan-son and quirky and hilarious cabaret songs from a truly international triple bill.
Superb French cabaret and chanson singer MONIQUE makes a long overdue PJ début tonight. Originally from the south of France and a graduate of the Nîmes Conservatoire, Monique now specialises in authentic French popular songs from the 1930s to the present day, many of them in original and faithful English translations, including work by Trenet, Aznavour, Piaf, Barbara, Prévert and Kosma, Bécaud, Josephine Baker and Patricia Kaas. You'll also find some originals, a little Flanders and Swann and a Corsican folksong thrown into the mix! This "chanteuse puis-sante et expressive" (Le Monde) has wowed the crowds at the Edinburgh fringe, Pizza on the Park and arts centres and festivals across Europe, as well as hosting her own international cabaret seasons.
SEBASTIAN MICHAEL makes a long overdue return to Pirate Jenny's with his own songbook of diverting, unusual and often hilarious sideways glances at life. Originally from Basel, Switzerland, Sebastian is now based in London where he also works as an actor, director and writer. Together with Charlotte Bicknell of This Life fame, Sebastian makes up one half of musical comedy act Kissing the Goldfish, veterans of many an Edinburgh fringe; they also run one of London's more unusual nights out, the diverting Troubadour Eclectic in Earls Court. Well worth seeing.
Host and resident performer DES de MOOR will also contribute his own mini-cabaret set in the company film and TV composer and Fran Landesman collaborator SIMON WALLACE, bringing his unique and dramatic performance to moving and witty originals as well as drawing on a selection of French, German and Dutch material in original translations.
