GROWN-UP SONGS
FOR GROWN-UP PEOPLE

So reads the sleeve note on this, the first ever compilation of English chanson, released by Irregular Records (IRR046) in February 2002. Des de Moor is one of nine artists to contribute two songs each to this disc, alongside veterans of literate English popular song like Pete Atkin and Leon Rosselson, and artists like Philip Jeays, Robb Johnson and Barb Jungr who have emerged in recent years as the new leading figures in the genre.

Des's contributions were specially recorded for this release and there are currently no plans to make them available elsewhere. They were taped in January in the company of regular collaborators Julia Doyle on double bass and David Harrod who, as well as his usual sparkling pianistic contribution, has provided some accordion too.

Of the two songs, one is a cover version but in an original translation. 'The Sailor's Longing' is a rendering of 'Het Verlangen van de Zeeman' by Flemish singer-songwriter Wannes van de Velde, a hauntingly beautiful waltz which Des also sings partly in Dutch. The other, 'It's Then You Know', is an original, a delicate, passionate and adult love song in the grand chanson tradition; the music is co-written with another regular collaborator, Russell Churney.
