Fantasmagoria
Pirate Jenny presents a sizzling bill of gypsy-flavoured quirky Anglo-French chanson and offbeat Antipodean songsmithing in tonight's bill.
Fantasmagoria were formed after French singer-guitarist Sebastien Guerreau and English singer-accordionist Tom Baker met in a British pub in 1998. Now joined by clarinettist Helen Williams and based in France, the band have brought their fusion of French café music, German cabaret and Gypsy folk and jazz to venues, festivals, functions and streets all over Europe.
With original songs fused with wry humour, a fine line in accordion-driven javas and waltzes, and two CDs to their credit, Fantasmagoria are making a long-overdue and very welcome return to Pirate Jenny's.
Also rich in wry humour is the work of New Zealand-born singer-songwriter and self-proclaimed professional liar Kath Tait, who takes her inspiration from the chaos of modern life seen from the bottom up and sideways round the bend. She's played everywhere from Dunedin to the Edinburgh Fringe and recorded two CDs of songs combining melodic tunes with lyrics that are outrageous, profound, humorous and thought provoking.
Kath has appeared before at PJs as one half of a duo with the equally original Jane Bom-Bane, but we're now delighted to present her in her own right.
Originally from New Zealand, she now lives and works in London.
As always, Pirate Jenny's tonight includes a performance by founder and host Des de Moor, a superb and dramatic singer, writer of salty English chanson and an acclaimed translator and populariser of songs from mainland Europe.
